Largest Massacre in Rio de Janeiro's History

Governor Cláudio Castro orchestrated an operation resulting in dozens of deaths. The article discusses the policy of repression targeting the Black and poor population and its consequences for the city.

Largest Massacre in Rio de Janeiro's History

Rio de Janeiro, like other Brazilian cities and states, needs public policies that guarantee life, dignity, and the right to education and health for all, not more deaths, more pain, and more violence. It's time to put an end to it.

The panic that spread through the streets of the favelas and neighborhoods was palpable. This massacre occurs on the eve of the start of the electoral year, which further evidences that the policy of repression and extermination of the Black and poor population is a strategy to ensure social control and strengthen a power machine based on fear and violence.

In the face of the chaos, Castro intends to deploy the Armed Forces and other troops to gain electoral influence and increase repression in Rio de Janeiro. Enough massacres.

This Tuesday, October 28th, in the morning, Governor Cláudio Castro orchestrated the largest massacre in the history of Rio de Janeiro, sowing terror in several communities and plunging the metropolitan region into panic. Enough with the so-called war on drugs.

The fight against police violence must be a priority. However, the reality is even more brutal, with many missing and injured who are not included in official statistics.

The barbarity that took over Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday is a brutal expression of the farce of the war on drugs, the so-called "public security policy" that promotes death and violence against the Black and poor population of the peripheries and chaos throughout the city.

The victims of this operation were mostly young Black people, who, as usual, were automatically classified as "terrorists" or "drug traffickers" by the speeches of Cláudio Castro and the major media. The supposed "public security policy" of Castro and other leaders who defend it is the defense of death.

Justice for all victims of state violence.

For the State, all young people from the favelas and hills are guilty until proven innocent. There are no investigations or justice, only summary judgment in the form of massacres that reveal increasingly alarming figures.

The operation today extended over several hills and regions of the city: Alemão, Penha, Anchieta, Méier, Grajaú-Jacarepaguá, Cidade de Deus, Chapadão, Engenho da Rainha, among others. Schools, hospitals, and businesses closed, directly affecting millions of workers and their families.
